About the artist
I cannot speak to my art as a whole. Each piece, or series, has its own story of conception and growth. I have been an artist all my life. So, it is not unusual that my paintings have evolved as I have grown as a person. Each day I look at things differently...and represent them on the canvas differently.
My Lola Series on women would not have possible 25 years ago. I did not possess the perspectives I enjoy today. My Reamer Series (juicers) is based on my 38 years of collecting reamers, and my Vintage Toy Series is based on many of the toys I played with as a young girl. There are years of knowledge and love that go into my paintings.
I do not paint just to paint the mountain, or the sea, or a building. I feel the subject as if I were the mountain, the sea, or the building.
I like to dress up and put on makeup. I love high heels and red lipstick. When I am a mountain, I want to be a pretty mountain. I want to dress up and be happy, so I paint a patch of red flowers on a green and yellow dress with silver high heels at the bottom.
While I was studying art and learning the techniques of painting, I tried to make everything look “just as it looks.” Now, I put imagination into my art. I put feeling into my art. I put myself into my art.
When you look at my art, I want you to smile and say “yep, that’s Arleen Blake!”
